Overview

The conference will take place at the Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM) – Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), from April 13 to 17, 2015. The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers from all over the world with varying backgrounds, but with a strong common interest in developing and/or applying quantitative methods in biology. Special focus will be given to symmetry principles in biological phenomena and dynamics (deterministic and stochastic) of biological processes. Furthermore, a special session to honor the memory of two of our colleagues that have recently passed away:

José Eduardo Martinho Hornos († December, 2013): A tribute to the father of the algebraic approach to the evolution genetic code, 20 years after. Professor Hornos (Zé Edu) passed away in December, 2013, leaving an enduring heritage both in theoretical physics and in mathematical biology. He also made contributions to the study of noise in gene expression and was a driving force for mathematical biology in Brazil. For the algebraic approach to evolution of the genetic code see here and here and for the repercussion of this work see here and here. For the work on noise in gene expression see here.

Francisco de Assis Ribas Bosco († December, 2012): Coming from the school of Nobel Prize winner Ilya Prigogine, Professor Francisco Bosco made contributions to the study of noise in gene expression, population genetics, viral evolution and, more generally, the use of dynamical systems and stochastic processes to model biological phenomena. For the work on population genetics see here and for the work on viral evolution see here. For the work on noise in gene expression see here and here.

Both were enthusiastic advocates of the interdisciplinary interactions between biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
